Object Permanence

Object Permanence is a fundamental building block of human cognition, and it is one that we develop through trial and error in our early months of life. As I observed my 8 month old son Julian playing with his pacifier, I was struck by the confusion on his face as he searched for it after I covered it with my hand. It was a poignant reminder of the importance of object permanence in our lives and how it shapes our understanding of the world around us.

Object permanence is essentially an inference problem, as we infer the existence of underlying parameters based on the data we observe. Just as babies understand that objects continue to exist even when they are not immediately visible, we can estimate unseen factors based on the data we have available. This understanding gives us a sense of security and reassurance, allowing us to confidently explore and engage with our surroundings.

This concept can also be applied to the development of faith, which involves believing in something that is not necessarily tangible or visible, but that we believe to be good and positive. Faith gives us the strength and resilience to persevere through difficult times, much like object permanence helps a baby navigate the world with confidence.

Suffering can be a difficult and challenging experience, but maintaining a sense of optimism and faith can help us to persevere through difficult times. Unlike object permanence, which is a cognitive development that we naturally develop, faith is often a choice. It involves choosing to believe in something that is not necessarily tangible or visible, but that we believe to be good and positive. This unwavering belief can provide us with strength and motivation to overcome challenges and setbacks, serving as a driving force that helps us to rise above suffering. It is a reminder that, no matter how difficult the circumstances, there is always the possibility for hope and progress.
